Dr Stanley van der Ziel, of the School of Culture and Communication, has been commissioned by the Estate of the late John McGahern to edit the author’s dramatic works. The edition, to be entitled The Rockingham Shoot and Other Dramatic Writings, has been contracted by the London publishing house Faber & Faber, and will comprise plays written for radio and television over the course of more than four decades.
The plays included in the volume were all produced and broadcast during McGahern’s lifetime, but the texts have never before been published. They remain objects of curiosity to many readers and critics of McGahern’s work. Working closely with McGahern’s widow, the editor, who knew McGahern personally during his lifetime, and who previously edited the authorised edition of his collected non-fiction (Love of the World: Essays, also published by Faber & Faber), is now working from archival copies held in various private and public collections in Ireland and the United Kingdom to establish an authoritative text of the plays.
Dr van der Ziel’s edition of McGahern’s plays will make significant body of work by an Irish author who has enjoyed popular as well as critical success in recent decades widely available for the first time; as such, this publication marks an important moment in a growing field of critical inquiry within the Arts and Humanities.
